Having spent the last eight years around the Austin music scene, Dallas has proven to be a refreshing change. There is an intimate connection artists have here with their fans long since gone in the “Live Music Capital” since the West Coast tech invasion of thirty-thousandaires and general douchebaggery. One such deep-rooted North Texas artist gaining attention recently is Jessie Frye.

DO St Patricks DayJessie Frye, a Denton-based singer-songwriter, has recently made her way into the national spotlight after being invited to play a local supporter rally for Democratic Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders at Harvest House in Denton. It’s no surprise the performance of her most recent single “One in a Million” was so well received that she was asked to open for Sanders when he appeared before a crowd of 7,000 at Verizon Theatre.

Jessie FryeWhen I first was asked to cover one of her shows, she was described as this edgy pop princess type. “Oh, one of those,” I thought. But, when I downloaded her music I was caught a bit off-guard. I don’t mean to say that what I heard doesn’t belong in the catchy pop genre, as it does. There is a level of depth to Frye’s music that I didn’t expect to hear that took me back a couple years – actually decades.

Immediately apparent in her album “Obsidian” are the heavy stylings of 80’s and 90’s rock and goth influences. Not to diminish her talents as a songwriter or the power of her vocal range, but the music behind the music can’t be ignored.

DO St Patricks DayFlanked by her band, who she calls her brothers, are Michael Garcia (guitar), Androo O’Hearn (bass), and Chad Ford (drums). They, along with Frye’s classical piano training, come together to bring back some legendary sounds  such as The Cure, Gerald McMann, Type O Negative, and My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult.

35 Denton 2016Coming off a busy two months on the local scene with the Thin Line and 35 Denton festivals, opening for Third Eye Blind at the Dallas Observer’s St. Patrick’s Day concert and the release of her beer “Boss Bitch” by Noble Rey Brewery, Frye is heading on the road on tour with dates currently scheduled across nine states over the next three months. I anticipate much, much more to come from this star.
