This year’s Dallas Fan Days kicked off on October 20th at the Irving Convention Center. As the end of October approached and Fan Days Dallas got closer, headlining celebrities cancelled and many feared that the event would be a washout. However, once again Dallas Fan Days did not disappoint. What it lacked in celebrity guests, it made up for in cosplay, vendors, and the fanatic spirit.
Dallas Fan Days occurs every fall and follows the much larger event, Fan Expo Dallas. This year, the convention headlined the Dr. Who’s 10th Doctor, David Tennant. Other celebrity guests included Graham McTavish (The Hobbit), Kristian Nairn (Game of Thrones), Bruce Boxleitner (Babylon 5), Mara Wilson (Matilda), Madelaine Petsch (Riverdale), Eugene BRave Rock (Wonder Woman), Austin St. John (Power Rangers), Jeremy Jordan (Supergirl), and Ruth Connell (Supernatural). Lines for celebrity guests moved quickly and many of the autographs were affordable.
There’s plenty to do at the expo and an assortment of fandoms are represented. A major draw to the event is the atmosphere. You can easily find people to talk to about your favorite shows, comics, actors, etc. True to Fan Expo events, cosplay was just as popular as ever. Each expo, cosplay tends to reflect the work of celebrity guests and recent movie/television. This year, there were plenty Pennywise clowns, daleks, Doctors, and super heroes. Many cosplayers get creative and will do mash-ups of multiple fandoms. Many cosplayers are approachable and will take photos!
Dallas Fan Days this year was a success, but we look forward to a better program next year. This year was the first year that refundable tickets were offered and there was a positive response to the alternative. Whether you are interested in loading up on merchandise, cosplaying, collecting autographs, playing board games or watching celebrity panels, there is something for everyone.
